Magnolia obovata



A species of Magnolia, native to Japan and southern Kurile Islands. One of the best summer-flowering magnolias for colder climates. Huge leaves (up to 50cm long) make this tree look like a tropical species. Big creamy white flowers are globular at first, opening out to saucer shaped, reaching 20-25cm in diameter. Very fragrant.

Botanical name: Magnolia obovata.
Other names: Magnolia hypoleuca, Japanese whitebark magnolia, Japanese cucumber tree, Japanese bigleaf magnolia.
Habit: middle-sized or vigorous tree, upright when young.
Height: 6-8m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6a and warmer parts of USDA zone 5b.
Flowering time: May - June.
