North American species (southern Appalachian Mountains and adjacent Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain), named for the Scottish botanist John Fraser (1750–1811). The large (16–25 cm in diameter with nine tepals) showy white flowers and large-leaved, coarse-textured foliage make Fraser magnolia quite an attractive ornamental tree.
Botanical name: Magnolia fraseri.
Other names: Fraser magnolia, mountain magnolia, earleaf cucumbertree, mountain-oread.
Habit: compact tree.
Height: 5-7m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6a.
Flowering time: May - June..
