Magnolia "Galaxy"


One of the best varieties for colder climates (USDA zone 6 and warmer). Deciduous, very upright, almost fastigiate tree producing upright deep red-purple buds opening to beautiful  large flowers (up to 20cm across) with wide red-purple tepals, rose purple inside, paler than sister hybrid "Spectrum".
Suitable for gardens where space is limited.
Selected by William F. Kosar (US National Arboretum, Washington DC, USA) in 1963.

Botanical name: Magnolia x "Galaxy".
Parentage: M.liliiflora "Nigra" x M.sprengeri var. diva.
Habit: upright tree.
Height: 5-7m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6a.
Flowering time: April - May and occasionally in July - August.
