Rare magnolia species, discovered in 1933, endemic to China (Anhui, Fujian, Hebei, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang). Bark gray, twigs green when young becoming purple with age. Flower buds are covered with fine grayish white hairs. Fragrant, pale pink flowers appear before leaves.
Botanical name: Magnolia amoena.
Other names: Tianmu (Tienmu) magnolia (so called from Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province in China where it grows)
Habit: small pyramidal tree.
Height: 5-6m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6a.
Flowering time: March - April.
