One of the best (and certainly most known) magnolia varieties, selected by Vance Hooper (Taranaki, New Zealand). Compact deciduous tree producing rich black-red buds that open to small globular tulip-shaped blooms.
Relatively hardy, very floriferous.
First prize at the International Plant trade Fair at Essen, Germany, 2011.
Botanical name: Magnolia x "Genie".
Parentage: (Magnolia liliiflora "Nigra" x Magnolia "Sweet Simplicity") x Magnolia "Sweet Valentine".
Habit: compact tree (or globular bush in colder climates).
Height: 3-4m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6b and warmer parts of zone 6a ("Genie" can withstand to temperatures down to at least -28°C).
Flowering time: April - May, and July-August in wetter climates.
