North American species, a deciduous or evergreen tree, native to the southeastern United States. It is evergreen in areas with milder winters, and is semievergreen or deciduous in colder areas of its range.
Flowers are creamy white, up to 14 cm diameter. Extremely fragrant (a very strong vanilla scent).
Botanical name: Magnolia virginiana.
Other names: sweetbay magnolia, sweetbay, laurel magnolia, swampbay, swamp magnolia, whitebay, beaver tree.
Habit: compact or middle-sized tree, sometimes multi-stemmed..
Height: 5-7m.
Hardiness: USDA zone 6b in Europe, 6a in North America. Some cultivars are half-zone hardier.
Flowering time: June - July.
